Why choose a COM-based SBC for your embedded system?

3D drawing of rugged I/O board

A COM-based SBC consists of a Computer-on-Module (COM), such as COM Express, mounted on a carrier board that provides additional I/O and power circuitry, plus an integrated thermal solution (typically an integrated heat spreader / mounting plate). A COM-based SBC provides major advantages over a traditional single-board computer whose design is fixed around a single processor:

  • Scalable CPU performance – You can swap out one COM for another in the exact same form factor but with a different processor, in order to improve the performance of your system.
  • Extended product lifetime – if the processor you’re using using is reaching end of life, a newer generation COM can be used in its place easily. COM-based solutions can easily last 20 years.
  • Earlier access to the latest processor technology – Most new processors are introduced in COMs 1-2 years before they are available in true single-board computer form. With a COM-based SBC you can gain the benefits of the latest processors with an off-the-shelf solution sooner, without having to design and manufacture your own carrier board.
  • Quicker custom solutions – If your application has special requirements such as physical shape, connectors, or I/O, Diamond Systems can design and build a custom SBC for you using a COM in a much shorter time frame and with much lower NRE cost than a traditional true single-board computer. Take advantage of our 35 years of experience with COM-based SBCs and custom designs to solve your problem and get to market faster.
  • Pick your processor – If you are targeting a specific processor for power consumption or performance, you can usually find it in a COM. Then you can work with the SBC vendor to integrate it with their carrier board, so you get the exact product you want.
